Gallery walls add such a great effect to any room. They can be as random or as simple as you want. As artistic and creative as you can be. And as much fun as they are to look at once they are done, they are a pretty tough thing to master. Your head can be jumbled with questions of ” do I need a theme?”, “Are there too many alike colors?”, “Do the shapes vary enough?”, and tons more. But here are just a few rule to follow when you are creating your own gallery wall.

1. Many times a room has one color scheme that consists of 2-3 colors and one main color. Make sure the pictures your gallery wall is made of uses more of the accent colors than the main color. You don’t want an over load of one color. You can also use a few different colors so you have a little dimension on your wall.

2. You don’t necessarily need a theme. You can of course if you want. Say for instance a dog theme, your wall can be covered with pictures of different types of dogs rather than just one. Mix it up a little bit. Don’t make everything identical.

Which leads us to our next tip,

3. You don’t want to have a wall full of just pictures add a few framed quotes in there also. The words give the eye a break from just tons of pictures. The same applies for colors. Throw in a few black and white pictures and qoutes too. it can act as white space.

4. You don’t want a ton of space between your pictures. I’ve done that before and just something about it looks off. You only want a few inches (1-3) between pictures. It should look like one coherent piece not like you couldn’t make your mind up on which picture you wanted to hang up. Make it look purposeful.

5. Make sure you have a variety of frames. Different colors, sizes and shapes. You don’t want a wall full of white 8×10 vertical frames all side by side. That will get way too boring.

6. Have fun with it and don’t be afraid to change it up. You are allowed to add and take away anything that you feel does’nt fit. Nothing is set in stone to mess it up, mix it up and have fun!
